Ironic installa nodi fisici invece di macchine virtuali. È un fork del driver Nova Baremetal. È meglio pensarlo come un'API per ipervisore su nodo fisico e un insieme di plugin che interagiscono con gli ipervisori su macchine fisiche. In maniera predefinita, userà PXE e IPMI in concerto per preparare e accendere/spegnere le macchine, ma Ironic supporta anche plugin per marche specifiche che possono implementare funzionalità aggiuntive.
