Kontroller validitet for UTF-8 og ASCII-filer
Programmet utfcheck undersøger en tekstfil og udskriver et overblik over hvad filen indeholder: ASCII, UTF-8, UTF-16 (enten big-endian- eller little-endian-baseret på en oprindelig Byte Order Mark) eller binære data. ASCII- og UTF-8-filer behandles yderligere; UTF-16 og binære filer er ikke. For en UTF-8-fil indeholder overblikket information om hvorvidt filen begynder med Unicode Byte Order Mark (U+FEFF). Alle efterfølgende data mødt som ikke er korrekt udformet ASCII- eller UTF-8 Unicode anses for at være binære data; ved læsning af sådanne data anses inddatafilen for ikke at være en korrekt tekstfil og programmet afsluttes med en fejlstatus.
Programmet utfcheck returnerer en afslutstatus for EXIT_SUCCESS hvis tekstfilen var korrekt udformet og ellers EXIT_FAILURE.
