'vrfy'는 e-mail 주소와 메일링 리스트를 확인하는 도구입니다. 가장 간단한 형식으로 "user@domain" 을 가져다가, "domain"에 대한 MX 호스트를 조사하여, 메인 MX 호스트 (모든 MX 호스트를 선택할 수도 있음) 또는 MX 호스트가 없을 경우 "domain" 자체에 SMTP VRFY 명령 실행합니다. "domain"이 없으면 "localhost"로 이동합니다.

아래의 더욱 복잡한 기능을 지원합니다:

 * 파일 또는 메일링 리스트를 재귀적으로 확장,
 * 메일 전달 루프 감지,
 * 완전한 RFC822 주소 규약 이해,
 * 로컬 또는 원격 모두에서 수행 할 수 있는 구문 검사,
 * 필요한 경우 대체 프로토콜 제품군을 활용하고 다양한 형태의
   세부 출력을 위해 다양한 옵션이 제공됩니다.

명백한 제한 사항이 있지만 (대부분 일부 호스트에서 잘못 구현된 VRFY 명령으로 인해), 그외에는 대체로 잘 동작합니다.
