rdiff는 diff와 patch를 하나로 합친것과 비슷하며, 바이너리 파일을 지원합니다. rsync 원격 델타 알고리즘을 활용하기 때문에 목적 파일과 동일한 위치에 있는 소스 파일을 필요로 하지 않습니다.

이를 사용하기 위해 원본 파일에 "서명"을 생성하고 (매우 작은) 서명을 수정된 파일과 동일한 위치로 복사합니다. 그런 다음 소스 파일을 수정된 파일로 변환하는데 필요한, 변경 사항을 설명하는 "델타"를 생성합니다. 그런 다음 작은 델타 파일을 사용해서 원본 파일을 "patch" 하여 수정된 파일로 변환 할 수 있습니다.
