Uno strumento per la ricerca, all'interno di file di testo, ed il filtraggio di flussi testuali, in base a criteri strutturati. Sgrep implementa un linguaggio d'interrogazione basato sulle cosiddette «espressioni a regione».

Come grep, sgrep può essere usato per qualsiasi tipo di file di testo. Ciò nonostante è molto più utile per file di testo in qualche modo strutturati. Un file contenente testo strutturato può essere definito come un file che obbedisce a qualche sintassi. Esempi di file di testo strutturato sono file SGML, HTML, C, TeX e messaggi di posta.
