7-Zip è un archiviatore di file con alto rapporto di compressione. Le principali funzionalità di 7-Zip sono:

 * alto rapporto di compressione nel formato 7z con compressione LZMA e LZMA2;
 * formati gestiti:
     * impacchettamento e spacchettamento: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP e WIM;
     * solo spacchettamento: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT,
         GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2,
         RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR e Z.
 * per i formati ZIP e GZIP, 7-Zip fornisce un rapporto di compressione che è
   migliore del 2 - 10 % rispetto al rapporto fornito da PKZip e WinZip;
 * cifratura AES-256 forte nei formati 7z e ZIP;
 * potente versione a riga di comando.

"7zip" fornisce:

 * /usr/bin/7z:  completo con funzionalità a plugin;
 * /usr/bin/7za: solo formati e funzionalità principali;
 * /usr/bin/7zr: solo LZMA (.7z, .lzma, .xz); eseguibile minimale.

Nota: il codice unRAR è stato eliminato per restare compatibili con le DFSG.

      Per utilizzare i file RAR, installare il pacchetto 7zip-rar che si
      trova nella sezione non-free.
