Xbuffy è un programma che mostra quante email non lette si hanno nelle differenti mailbox. È possibile avere titoli differenti per le mailbox e definire cosa deve accadere quando arriva nuova posta. Per esempio si può far emettere un suono e invocare un comando shell.

Premendo il pulsante 1 del mouse sul titolo associato a una mailbox, viene mostrata una lista con le righe From: e Subject: dal relativo file di spool. Se si preme il pulsante 2 viene eseguito un comando arbitrario.

Allo stesso modo Xbuffy può tenere sotto controllo newsgroup via NNTP.
