stress è uno strumento che impone una quantità configurabile di sforzo su CPU, memoria, I/O o dischi su un sistema operativo conforme a POSIX e riporta qualunque errore rilevato.
stress non è un benchmark. È uno strumento usato dagli amministratori di sistema per valutare quanto bene il sistema scalerà, dai programmatori del kernel per valutare le caratteristiche percepite delle prestazioni, e dai programmatori dei sistemi per esporre le classi di bug che si manifestano solamente o più di frequente quando il sistema è sotto un carico pesante.
