xdg-user-dirs er et hjælpeværktøj til håndtering af »velkendte« brugerkataloger som skrivebordsmappen og musikmappen. Det håndterer også lokalisering (dvs. oversættelse) af filnavnene.
Måden det fungerer på er, at xdg-user-dirs-update køres meget tidligt i logind-fasen. Dette program læser en konfigurationsfil, og et sæt af standardkataloger. Det opretter dernæst lokaliserede versioner af disse kataloger i brugerens hjemme-katalog og opsætter en konfigurationsfil i $(XDG_CONFIG_HOME)/user-dirs.dirs (XDG_CONFIG_HOME er som standard ~/.config) som applikationer kan læse for at finde katalogerne.
