Spew bruges til at måle I/O-ydlese for tegnenheder, blokenhed og almindelige filer. Programmet kan også bruges til at oprette I/O- belastninger til at stresse systemer, mens dataintegritet verificeres.

Spew er nemt at bruge og er fleksibelt. Ingen konfigurationsfiler eller komplicerede klient/server-konfigurationer er krævet. Spew opretter også sine egne datamønstre, som er designet til at gøre det nemt at finde eller fejlsøge problemer med dataintegritet.
