otp opretter nøgle- og adgangskodelister for verificering og sikkerhedsmæssige formål i en række forskellige formater. Nøgler kan være af enhver længde, bestå af tal eller bogstaver (store/små), og alfabetiske adgangskoder kan enten være fuldstændig vilkårlige (mest sikker) eller overholde den digrafiske statistik for engelsk (nemmere at huske ved transkribering, men mindre sikker).
For computerprogrammer, for eksempel engangs logindadgangskoder, kan otp oprette en fil indeholdende MD5-underskriften for hver oprettet nøgle. Dette tillader at computeren kan verificere nøgler uden behovet for at gemme nøglerne i klartekst.
