Kakoune er et koderedigeringsprogram stærkt inspireret af Vim; og som sådan er de fleste af dets kommandoer ens og programmet deler Vi's model for »tastetryk som et tekstredigeringssprog«. Kakoune kan fungere i to tilstande, normal og indsættelse. I indsættelse indsættes nøgler direkte i det nuværende mellemlager. I normal tilstand bruges nøgler til at manipulere den nuværende markering og til at gå i indsættelsestilstand. Kakoune har stærk fokus på interaktivitet, de fleste kommandoer tilbyder øjeblikkelig og trinvise resultater, mens de stadig er konkurrencedygtige (forstået som i antallet af tastetryk) med Vim. Kakoune fungerer på markeringer, som er orienterede, inklusive tegninterval; markeringer har et anker og et markørtegn.
