Extsmail maskerer sig som UNIX sendmails standardprogram, læser beskeder og sender dem senere via en datakanal til brugerdefinerede kommandoer.
På en måde kan extsmail ses som en meget simpel »tiny« sendmail (Think SSMTP, UUCP ...).
Typisk brug er at tillade e-post via en ssh-datakanal til eksterne servere, der kører en fuld sendmail-kompatibel MTA. Extsamil er designet til at have fornuftige standarder og konfigurationen er et hurtigt engangsjob.
