GNU »m4« er en implementering af den traditionelle UNIX-makrobehandler. Den er tæt på at være SVR4-kompatibel, selvom den indeholder nogle udvidelser (f.eks. kan den håndtere mere end 9 parametre til makroer). »m4« har også indbyggede funktioner til at inkludere filer, kørsel af skalkommandoer, aritmetik m.m. Autoconf kræver GNU »m4« for at oprette »configure«-skripter, men ikke for at køre dem.
